Spanish Duo in Scotland

Samuel Hernandez, clarinet

Marcos Fernandez, piano
........

After two years studying and playing together at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama we looked back and saw that while we have been in Scotland we have shared our time, thoughts, experiences and nationality. We have built up a good bond between clarinettist and pianist and have also made a strong link between composer and performer as Marcos has written many new compositions for clarinet which have been played by Samuel. It made us realise that we were consolidating our understanding about each other, which let us perform with the same ideas and allowed us to enhance our musical qualities in communicating with the audience.

We think we can contribute to the traditional repertoire for clarinet and piano, in terms of performance, but we are also interested in the 20th century works and new commissions that have an important feature of communication to the audience.

Marcos Fernandez, piano

Born in Barcelona, Marcos completed a piano degree in the Escola Superior de Musica de Catalunya with Maria Jesus Crespo and Ramon Coll. At the same time as this, he was undertaking six years of study in violin at the Conservatoire of Barcelona. During his career as a pianist he has won several piano competitions and also performed in various recitals in Spain. At the age of seventeen he was invited by an important theatre company (La puca) to work as a composer and pianist for a Melodrama touring in Spain. His compositions were awarded prizes including The Patron’s Fund Prize and the Stevenson Scholarship to study at the RSAMD - where he is currently studying with Rory Boyle. Marcos was also runner-up in the Dinnah Wolfe Memorial Award in 2007. In 2008 he received a commission from the RSAMD to write a clarinet concerto, which was premiered by Samuel Hernandez as part of the Buffet Clarinet Festival. Also during 2008, he wrote a piece and was given the opportunity of having it premiered by Maximilano Martín, virtuoso Spanish clarinetist and soloist of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Recently, Marcos was selected to represent the RSAMD on the 2008 forum for the composers of British Conservatoires.
...

Since a very young age he has been fascinated with Irish and Scottish traditional music. This has led to an interest in other related contemporary music in Scotland which culminated in a performance during 2005 with a flautist playing music by Rory Boyle, Edward McGuire and John McLeod among others.
